EARNINGS

What swim coaches in Singapore earn

It comes down to one thing: whether a swim school pays you a wage, or families pay you directly. Here’s how both work, and what our coaches earn.

Employed or independent: two different numbers

Swim schools in Singapore typically pay instructors by the hour. Part-time instructors are usually paid about $20–45 an hour.

An independent coach is paid the family’s lesson fee instead, and the difference is big. When our founder, Herron Ho, was teaching for other swim schools, he’d run a class of five children worth about $1,000 to the school and take home $50 for the hour.

As a Swimpreneur coach, you’re independent: students pay you directly.

Lesson fees by class size

What our active coaches typically earn per hour of teaching. Bigger classes earn you more per hour, while each family pays less.

Fee per hour of teaching
Class sizeFee per hour
1 student$80
2 students$100
3 students$120
4 students$150
Rates vary with class size.

What that looks like in a week

  • A Saturday morning

    Four one-hour classes of three students: 4 × $120 = $480. With four students in each: 4 × $150 = $600.

  • A part-time week

    Three one-to-one lessons and three pairs across two evenings and a weekend: 3 × $80 + 3 × $100 = $540 for six hours of teaching.

  • A realistic month

Teacher Ken earns about $5,000 a month working around 20 hours a week. Count travel and the gaps between lessons, and that’s roughly $58 for every hour he works. Plan around that, not the table multiplied by your free hours.

What to budget for

  • Travel between condos, and the time it takes.
  • Unpaid gaps between lessons.
  • Cancelled lessons, for weather or illness.
  • Liability insurance: not required for private coaching, but advisable.
  • The course fee, which we go through on the call.

These figures are typical, not a promise of income. What you earn depends on your class sizes, your schedule and where you teach. What we guarantee is your first two students.
