Swim instructor certification in Singapore: SSI, AUSTSWIM, STA and NROC compared
There are two routes to teaching swimming in Singapore: an international swim-teaching certificate for private lessons, and the national coaching route for schools and public pools. Here’s what each involves.

The short answer
To teach private lessons, at condos, to families or in private swim schools, you need a swim-teaching certification such as SSI Swim Teacher, AUSTSWIM or STA. First aid and CPR are wise to hold (AUSTSWIM requires current CPR).
To coach in MOE schools or to teach the national SwimSafer programme, you need to be on the National Registry of Coaches (NROC), and ActiveSG pools generally ask for it too. That means the SG-Coach course from Singapore Aquatics, Standard First Aid and a safe-sport module.
So the right certification depends on where you want to teach.

Where each lets you teach
Condos and private swim schools
Any of the swim-teaching certifications. Private swim coaching doesn’t need a government licence. Condo pools set their own house rules: some don’t allow coaching, some ask coaches to register.
ActiveSG pools
Coaching at public pools generally needs NROC membership and a usage permit. Check with ActiveSG before you plan on it.
MOE schools
Sports CCA instructors need valid NROC membership and Standard First Aid, must be 18 or older, and must be registered with MOE.
SwimSafer
Teaching the national water-safety programme needs NROC, Standard First Aid with AED, and the SwimSafer 2.0 Instructor certification. An SSI, AUSTSWIM or STA certificate alone doesn’t cover it.
Questions most guides skip
- What does it cost, all in, and how long until I’m earning?
- The certification itself is roughly S$1,000–2,100 (see the table above), plus a first aid course if it isn’t included. The courses themselves take days to a few weeks. The slow part is usually what comes after: finding students. Most courses leave that to you.
- Do I need NROC to teach at a condo?
- No. NROC is required for MOE schools, ActiveSG pools and SwimSafer. For a condo, what matters is the condo’s own house rules and what the family is looking for.
- Do I need insurance?
- It isn’t required for private coaching, but liability insurance is sensible to have.
- Can I make a living part-time?
- Yes. Several of our coaches teach part-time. Lesson fees, and what they earn, are on our earnings page. Swim coach earnings →
Where Swimpreneur fits
Swimpreneur is our course on the SSI route: you’re certified as an SSI Swim Teacher, the qualification built for private and condo teaching, rather than the NROC route.
What makes it different is everything around the certificate: attachments teaching real students with experienced coaches before you’re certified, and two paying students assigned to you after you pass.
